Unkle Funkle – Supernatural

Unkle Funkle is back! well, he never really went away, his music is just so obscure it takes some serious digging to find. But now he’s back and in print and he may have just made all other music obsolete with his new single Magic Woman to be released on the forthcoming Supernatural set to hit sometime soon…ish or whenever Burger Records feels like it i guess, I pre-ordered mine. The sophomore record follows Picture of My Dick (and yes, it is exactly what you asked for, a genius genre destroying album with a picture of his dick as the album art). If you’re familiar with Gnar Tapes he’s one of the head honcho’s behind that label and you’ve probably heard his bass lines delivered on The Memories and White Fang records, and if you’re a true head then you know that he released a stripped down version of Magic Woman via his bandcamp like 3 years ago, but whatever, this shit will explode all over the dance floor, leave a sticky mess and your body will absolutely love him for it.

Tess Parks & Anton Newcombe – “I Declare Nothing”

Anton Newcombe, Brian Jonestown Massacre ring leader and talent scout for his Berlin based record label, A Recordings Ltd has been collaborating with Toronto born singer/songwriter Tess Parks over the last year or so and has prepped a full length record, I Declare Nothing available June 29th via A Recordings Ltd.

Tess Parks is responsible for all the lyrics and when delivered through her evocatively stirring, cracked vocals, at only 24, she’s proving to be a true force. One reviewer describes her as “Patti Smith on Quaaludes”…sounds about right.

Death and Vanilla – “To Where The Wild Things Are”

The Swedish psychedelic dream pop trio, Death and Vanilla drop their latest effort      To Where The Wild Things Are May 4th via Fire Records. Story is they recorded this whole thing with a single vintage mic…also “We found an old library record where one of the tracks was just someone playing single notes on a harpsichord and we sampled each note and built melodies from that. The notes were slightly out of tune, but we thought it sounded good anyway.” yeah…I think it sounds good too.

POND – “Man It Feels Like Space Again”

Australia based psych wizards Pond, released their 6th studio record, Man It Feels Like Space Again Jan 27th via Caroline Records. Ok, it’s early April and Im gonna go ahead and call it… this is the best record of the year, not the first quarter…the whole fucking year!! It’s Pond fully realized. The band features a few crossover alliances with Tame Impala  Nick Allbrook (lead vocals/guitar/former bassist of Tame Impala) Jay Watson (drums/vocals/current guitarist vocals of Tame Impala) Joseph Ryan (Guitar/Bass/Vocals) Jamie Terry (Keys) and mixed by Kevin Walker (Tame Impala).

Pond formed in 2008 in Perth Australia with the idea of creating “an all inclusive, ego-free collaborative” and have evolved with every record into the dynamic psych driven machine they are today. The record is a cohesive piece of sonic brilliance, so extracting independent standouts proved a chore albeit below you’ll find a couple tasters along with a handful of videos including a short interview.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – “I’m In Your Mind Fuzz”

The extremely prolific, Melbourne based, 7 piece psych outfit King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are set to release their 5th record (in 2 years), I’m In Your Mind Fuzz, on 11/11 via Castle Face Records stateside (Heavenly in Europe and Flightless in Australia).

Self-described as “completely fried theremin wielding psychopaths,” I could attempt to describe their fuzz filled fantasy myself although Jon Dwyer (Thee Oh Sees frontman and Castle Face founder) has done it best…

“this Australian beast of a band with a bear of a name and a thick herd of band members delivers many things to us on this warped song cycle – a skeleton of propulsive kraut-beat fleshed out with a liberal dose of citric sweetness, flutes and harmonicas bleeding through the mix often and welcomingly, tons of wah and a hero’s journey/Heavy Metal early 80’s fantasy sort of vibe, and many lovely left turns into psychedelic mellowing, both groovily and sometimes with just a dash of DMT dread. The whole thing is just gooey with tape manipulations, phase shifts, and saturations, but there are clearly many tasty tidbits that bubble to the top, and they’re sticky.”

yep…that about covers it.

Lace Curtains – A Signed Piece of Paper

Michael Croomer (formerly of Harlem) started his side project Lace Curtains back in 2012 with the debut The Garden Of Joy And The Well Of Loneliness. If you follow Decibelity you may recall the track High Fantasy on Decibelcast Vol.5.  The follow up, A Signed Piece of Paper is prepped and ready for a release on Oct. 28th via Croomers’ own label female fantasy with a collab tape release through Burger Records.

Croomer on the title of the record and the lead single…“The title of the album comes from an old saying—‘Don’t come to Hollywood without a signed piece of paper’—from when talent scouts would go to beauty contests in places like Des Moines and tell a girl she should come to Hollywood to be a movie star. Back then, the actors were contract players for studios so the actor would come out and if they couldn’t get signed by the studio, their options were usually pretty limited and often rough. This song is about Biggie Smalls. Wilshire and Fairfax was the corner where he was shot.”

GOLD ZEBRA – GOLD ZEBRA

GOLD ZEBRA

I’ve really been enjoying this dark, synth heavy wave of music for a little while now with artists like Chromatics and Polica.  One group that hasn’t gotten enough recognition though is GOLD ZEBRA.  They are a girl/boy duo from Montreal and they released their self titled album a few months back on Visage Musique.  The album is full of synthesizer melodies, simple beats and rich spacey vocals and it kinda feels like driving down a dark desert highway with no end in sight.  It’s worth a listen if just for the next long nighttime drive you might take.

Check out some of my favorite tracks and videos below and check out their bandcamp to get the album here.

Joel Gion – “Apple Bonkers”

Joel Gion is best known as the tambourine weilding/percussionist personality for the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Although, on August 18th he will prove himself to be much more than that. Harnessing a similar ’60s psychadelic vibe Gion will emerge on his own, or as the leader rather with his debut, Apple Bonkers  via a co-release between The Reverberation Appreciation Society and The Committee To Keep Music Evil and a limited edition cassette on Burger Records

Joel on the record…”With all the BJM members now living  so spread out across the world, I found myself increasingly missing the album making process. This feeling of disconnect is what kick started me into exploring my own song writing process and turned out to be a hugely important piece of self discovery. No more time for my beloved laziness. So I made my own music with a bunch of friends in the studio coming and going and having a great time creating. I think a lot of people are going to be surprised by this album.”

Co-produced by current BJM members Collin Hegna and Rob Campanella the record features a string of BJM members and ex-members along with Pete Holmstrom of The Dandy Warhols, Ryan Van Kriedt of the The Asteroid #4/Dead Skeletons and Jason “Plucky” Anchondo of the Warlocks/ Spindrift.

Alex G – “DSU”

Philadelphia resident, Alex G is set to release his first, physical, full length DSU via Orchid Tapes june 17th. The first pressing sold out in 11 hours and it’s understandable why. His music has weaved its way through the internets for several years now and is finally getting the physical treatment it deserves. His bleak, introspective lyrics ride gently above electronic texture and layered within lathargic guitar work. It’s masterful lo-fi weirdness. You can find his previous 11 albums in digital form at his bandcamp.

pre-order DSU here.  As of now the second pressing is still available but grab it quick.
