DecibelCast Vol. 20 “The Nineteen Ninety-Four Tape”

dB20

The idea with this one is pretty straight forward: It’s our 20th DecibelCast, and it’s been 20 years since 1994, so here’s a 20th anniversary celebration of hip-hop in 1994.

1994 was a massive year for hip-hop; many believe it to be the genre’s creative zenith (although I think you could make a case for 1993, 1995 and probably 1996 as well). The West Coast G-funk sound was still largely dominant, but the tides were turning and New York was again asserting itself— setting the stage for the East-West battle of the mid-’90s

Biggie and Nas both released their debut LPs–both were insta-classics. Gang Starr, Jeru the Damaja, Organized Konfusion, The Beatnuts, Digable Planets and The Beastie Boys all put out great records.  The Roots signed to a major label, Slick Rick dropped an album from prison, and the Wu Tang takeover was gaining momentum. In the south UGK and the Ghetto Boys were continuing to do their own thing, and an unknown duo from Atlanta called OutKast quietly offered the world a glimpse of the future of hip-hop. On the other side of the Atlantic Mo’ Wax was inventing trip-hop with singles from DJ Shadow and DJ Krush at the same time a French tastemaker called DJ Cam was perfecting his mad blunted jazz  sound.

This mix largely focuses on the resurgent New York style of ’94. It’s an ode to East Coast boom-bap, which has aged much better than the West Coast G-funk.

DecibelCast Vol. 6 “Summer Soulstice Mixtape”

“Here it is a groove slightly transformed, just a bit of a break from the norm…” pretty much sums up this mix and it also sparks the memory of probably the most classic hip hop summer song of all time. That’s sort of what we were going for with this edition of DecibelCast, a familiar summer vibe but with a slightly tweaked, newer update, filled with tracks that bring forth that feeling of hot relaxing days and fun party nights.  There are a few old school classics and some remixes but also plenty of fresh brand new shit to keep it interesting as well.

This time around we also decided the best way to make a “mixtape” is to actually mix the damn thing, so we enlisted a compadre to do this proper.  FlyPaper Music has been DJing for quite some time and always holds it down (check out his soundcloud here). Although the mix was mostly curated by me (Evander Hologram), we both worked on this together for way too many long summer nights trying to make this thing perfect to bump for years to come (which also kinda explains why its coming mid-summer).  Either way we hope it moves your soul, makes you “just sit back and unwind” and most of all, enjoy, cause this is summertime.

Download the complete mix as one track below (tracked version coming soon..) And if you wish for a full track by track version unmixed send us a request and we can probably make it happen too.

Fresh New Tracks

fresh bear tracks after winter hibernation

So there are a bunch of really good tracks I have stumbled across recently coming out of hibernation and so I’m just putting them all into one post for y’all right here.

First is a new Beastie Boys track!!! It’s called “Make Some Noise” and the full video is below. It is taken from the long version of the video called “Fight For Your Right (Revisited)” which will be released along with the full album on May 3rd. The new album is called “Hot Sauce Committee Part 2” and is streaming at the Beasties site here

The only place I could find this track and the Passion Pit remix of it for free is ironically at a site called fresh new tracks. So go there and get both of those and whatever else your heart desires.

Although not as big as a new Beastie Boys album, a new My Morning Jacket album is dropping May 31st and you can get the title track from the album “Circuital” at their website (click above link).

Next TV Girl has a free EP you can get here. Along with a 7″ they released with Dirty Gold.

New Villager has a track I cant get out of my head called “Rich Doors” that I found for free at RCRD LBL here. And if you don’t know about RCRD LBL it is one of the best sources for new free music on the interwebs fo sho.

Purity Ring came out with a new 7″ today I think with “Ungirthed” on one side and “Lofticries” on the B side which you can get for free here.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra is a band that I think will explode in your face soon even though they are unknown and I really know nothing about them but the song “How can u luv me” which you can get here. They just signed to fat possum and are on tour so check em out if you want to but I dont really care geez.

And finally I’m gonna end with a hard azz hip hop track so you don’t question my street cred. Its produced by Afrojack and blackberry commercial star Diplo and I know its by Chris Brown but for some reason he is having a resurgence which no one can explain… Anyway the track is called “Look at Me Now” its hot and it features Wheezy and Busta Bust and you can get it for free from Mad Decent here. Below is the video so you can see crazy Chris Brown dancing…Enjoy!

Anyways there you have it… Have fun finding and listening.
