DecibelCast Vol. 13 “Projectile Punk”

So, the story behind this, the thirteenth volume of our DecibelCast series, has to do with my hard drive crashing, which resulted in the loss of about 11 years of digital audio—or 80% of my overall digital music library.

In my grief I could think of little else to do but to finally, belatedly climb aboard the Spotify train. Given the vast amount of new music made instantly available to me via the popular service, it’s unclear why i began to do what I did; but for some obscure reason I set about constructing various “definitive” playlists of every genre I could think of.

It was actually Evander Hologram who first suggested that I turn my old school punk playlist into an official dBCast.

The result is what you see here. It’s kind of like an old cassette tape mix that has been kicking around in someone’s back seat for a few decades, and given the fidelity of many of the recordings it’s probably best to think of it that way.

The track list kind of comes from all over, but a large portion of it is from these great Killed by Death compilations I had gotten a hold of a while back. The rest are either things I found around the Internetz once I decided to make this shit official, or random odds and ends that were in heavy rotation back in my old punk rock days.

I can say that regardless of the way this stuff has aged or what all of you out there might think of it, this is the mix tape that the 16-year-old me dreamed about having in his collection. Enjoy.

It’s been a kind of a long winter (well they always seem that way though, right?) and it’s time to move on to the next couple of seasons, like spring and summer.  My way of doing this is to travel to a tropical island so I can burn off my pale white skin in one quick trip.  I know that you’re getting jealous of my amazing vacation, but don’t be so mad!  I’ve made a mix to help you get into the mood of the next season.  So even if you dont get to go to a white sandy beach, hopefully you can close your eyes, put on these relaxing jams, and pretend you’re there.  Don’t take a vacation, just hit play on this mix and take a Playcation. (Not to be confused with Playstation™)

DecibelCast Vol. 10 “A Seasonal Affectation”

Installment number 10 of our DecibelCast series is finally here (and not a moment too soon). The mix is basically a cross section of the various different musics I’ve been listening to this season, and thus stylistically it kind of careens wildly all over the map— lots of ’60s psyche rock, some hip-hop, some sad ’90s-style post rock, some foreign pop music and a bunch of odds and ends from 2012. In an attempt to keep the proceedings at least semi-coherent, the over-arching theme—as the name would imply—is one of melancholic introspection: an aural accompaniment to the short days and long nights of winter.

I had a lot of tracks in mind for this one and the runtime quickly ballooned to over 100 minutes. I was going to make it much shorter, but it split in half quite naturally, and so I decided to keep everything, and present it to you in two installments. That being said, it’s still intended to run seamlessly all the way through, so if you have the time check it out from start to finish.

I had a good time making this and I in my opinion it’s one my best, so hope y’all enjoy.

DecibelCast Vol. 9 “Doin It In A Haunted House”

Halloween has been my favorite holiday for as long as I can remember, probably because it’s two days after my birthday so I’ve always associated the two.  It’s a special birthday this year—the big three oh—so I decided to make an extra special, haunted mix for all you freaky zombies.  After starting this project I realized there were way too many scary awesome songs out there that needed to be heard. So instead of getting rid of some of the them, I decided to split them into a two headed monster mix.

Side A is the party side to get all you ghouls and ghosts bumping in the night.  First and foremost on the mix is Yvonne Gage‘s Doin It In A Haunted House (1984), which is such an amazing, hilarious, blatant ripoff of Micheal Jackson‘s “Thiller” that it deserves to have an entire DecibelCast named for it.  I also found some pretty ridiculous remixes of other classics like the Monster Mash remixed by HOORAY! and the out of control “Ghostbusters” remix by none other than LMFAO(?).  A couple of fresh semi-relevant dance tracks were thrown in there as well—one from 2 Bears, a side project of Hot Chip member Joe Goddard, and one new track that came out just this week from Holy Ghost!.  All in all the mix should get you shaking it harder in your costume than a kid hopped up on Halloween candy.

Side B is more of an indie rock, after party, winding down affair with a couple of monster jams in the beginning, but a lot of chill, brain eating tracks after that, because if you’re really gonna “do it” you might wanna slow it down a little.  My second favorite find, after the title track, is Do They Know It’s Hallowe’en? (2005) by The North American Hallowe’en Prevention Initiative (or NAHPI). It’s a strange charity project song for UNICEF that features Arcade Fire, Beck, Feist, Thurston Moore, Devendra Banhart, Karen O and David Cross doing a parody Do They Know Its Christmas?.  The rest of the tracks on this side are pretty self explanatory, with titles like “Graveyard Girl” and “Vampire,” but they all fit very eerily together.

So there you have it, two full CDs worth of pumpkin-smashing, egg-tossing, toilet-paper-throwing, trick-or-treating jams to help you celebrate Halloween in all its glory.  Hope you all have a seriously haunted Halloween!

DecibelCast vol. 8 “long to be rad”

So… I have been rather quiet as of late. Isolated on a 15,000 acre tree farm in the great Northwest an hour north of Seattle at Pilchuck glass school. Time here is, well, somewhat hazy. More similar to the thick fog that rolls in from the Puegot Sound and constructing its presence in the glass we form. This month the theme is loosely based on my experience here, isolation and introspection as it comes and goes.

The first track is a spoken word poem from Silver Jews lead man David Berman  with the Avalanches playful instrumentation woven into the background. From there it is an amalgamation of various new tracks from artists I’m excited about. So here it is…

DecibelCast Vol. 7 “Discobelity”

As you may have already discerned from the title, Vol. 7 of our DecibelCast series delves deeply into retro dance territory – think hideous polyester shirts with huge collars, ridiculously flared pantaloons and pointy ugly shoes… and cocaine of course, ridiculous amounts of cocaine on trays strapped to the heads of midget waiters (or something).

Now, had you told the me from 10 years ago that I would be promoting something like this, I would have surely looked at you cockeyed and said something to the effect of “Are you fucking High?” so allow me to give a bit of background on this one.

I began 2012 primarily listening to old funk and soul music, and in my searchings, I  came across a fair amount of disco.  (I had slowly, grudgingly come to at least respect the genre at this point, for without it there would be no house music and without house there never would have been jungle, and without jungle there would have been no drum and bass, and without drum and bass my musical taste would never have become as broad as it is now.)

I remember jokingly telling both TY-rannosaurus-RIE and Evander Hologram that I probably had enough in my possession to put together a mix. When both of them unexpectedly responded with encouragement, I thought “fuck it, if nothing else it’ll put some more variety into the DecibelCast collection.”

The general aim was to display the full spectrum of the genre, which is actually much broader than probably most folks realize (I know I didn’t). So here you have it: 74  minutes of mac’d-out disco music, from under the sea to the dance floors of swanky night clubs; from the outer reaches of space to the jungles of Africa and back again, I give you Discobelity.

DecibelCast Vol. 4 – “Sprung Again”

This ended up taking so much longer than originally planned. I began this year listening almost exclusively to music from the ’70s – mostly funk, soul, reggae and salsa… and yeah a bit disco as well – and so I thought it might be nice to put together a little mix of the vintage funk and soul music I had been so enjoying: That was all.

Unfortunately it ended up being a much more arduous process, which entailed yours truly completely losing the plot several times. Getting side-tracked, and moving away from the purely soul theme, I briefly entertained the idea of a multi-era, multi-genre West Coast mix. That ultimately didn’t end up happening either. Around this time, I got busy with other things and came close to deciding to just scrap the project entirely. It seems somewhere along the way I forgot the whole point, which was to make a compilation of smoothed-out jams to commemorate the spring. And so, with this mix comprising mostly vintage funk and soul tunes from mostly California artists, hopefully I’ve achieved just that.

DecibelCast Vol. 3 – “Love Sick Mixtape”

We’ve all been there before, falling in love with someone new, or already in love, or missing the love we once had.  Whichever way, love is the strongest emotion we have as humans… or at least the most popular, since it’s always talked about and sung about. In this next release from the DecibelCast series we stick to this subject pretty diligently, almost to the point of making you sick of it.  So whether or not you’re in love, looking for love, or just plain sick and tired of love all together, you should give it one more try even if it’s just through these lovely tunes.
