DecibelCast Vol. 16 – “GRL PRBLMS”

We’ve all been there at some point in our lives; a relationship gets hard and problems start to occur:  fights, disagreements, arguments—maybe even time apart or breaking up.  Most of the time these issues can be fixed or overcame with time, but this requires some thinking, some love and the right music to make it through.

For me, hip-hop has always served well.  I don’t know why it works, maybe it’s the heavy beats, the nonchalant dismissal of feelings, or just the overall understanding that these types of things are universal, that everyone goes through them.  To that end, this mix is dedicated to the struggles we all go through in relationships and to the problems each and every man has with his woman, as explained by some of the best tracks out there right now.

“Hip-hop isn’t nearly as complex as a woman is.”
– Talib Kweli

Decibelcast Vol. 12 – “Playcation”

It’s been a kind of a long winter (well they always seem that way though, right?) and it’s time to move on to the next couple of seasons, like spring and summer.  My way of doing this is to travel to a tropical island so I can burn off my pale white skin in one quick trip.  I know that you’re getting jealous of my amazing vacation, but don’t be so mad!  I’ve made a mix to help you get into the mood of the next season.  So even if you dont get to go to a white sandy beach, hopefully you can close your eyes, put on these relaxing jams, and pretend you’re there.  Don’t take a vacation, just hit play on this mix and take a Playcation. (Not to be confused with Playstation™)

Shlohmo feat. Jeremih – “Bo Peep (Do U Right)”

If you’ll recall Jeremih made our 2012 faves list with his awesomely weird take on modern R&B—equal parts Frank Ocean, The Weeknd and R. Kelly. And last fall Shlohmo, a longtime favorite of the site, flipped the crooner’s ode to romance “Fuk U All the Time” into the kind of screw-inspired chunky R&B number he seems to be trafficking as of late.

With that in mind, it was probably only a matter of time before these two hooked up. The result is pretty much what you’d expect, and I mean that in the best possible sense.

Jeremih – “Fuck You All The Time” (Shlohmo Remix)

DecibelCast Vol. 10 “A Seasonal Affectation”

Installment number 10 of our DecibelCast series is finally here (and not a moment too soon). The mix is basically a cross section of the various different musics I’ve been listening to this season, and thus stylistically it kind of careens wildly all over the map— lots of ’60s psyche rock, some hip-hop, some sad ’90s-style post rock, some foreign pop music and a bunch of odds and ends from 2012. In an attempt to keep the proceedings at least semi-coherent, the over-arching theme—as the name would imply—is one of melancholic introspection: an aural accompaniment to the short days and long nights of winter.

I had a lot of tracks in mind for this one and the runtime quickly ballooned to over 100 minutes. I was going to make it much shorter, but it split in half quite naturally, and so I decided to keep everything, and present it to you in two installments. That being said, it’s still intended to run seamlessly all the way through, so if you have the time check it out from start to finish.

I had a good time making this and I in my opinion it’s one my best, so hope y’all enjoy.

Nicolas Jaar

Nicolas Jaar is a young electronic technician who has been making fresh music for just a few years now. His sound has ranged from some spacey ambient experimental endeavors to his more recent stuff under the Darkside moniker and other remixes and collaborations which sound more poppy and danceable. He started out on the Wolf + Lamb label and now runs his own label Clown and Sunset. If you downloaded our February mix you might already be familiar with his most popular track featuring the sexy vocals of Scout LaRue. Check it and some other tracks below.

Nicolas Jaar – “With Just One Glance (feat. Scout LaRue)”

Shlohmo – “Vacation EP”

As somebody who’s been into Shlohmo’s beats for a minute now, it’s nice to see him getting the props he so deserves these days.

Currently residing in NYC, the SoCal native cut his teeth at the now legendary Low End Theory (I had the chance to see him headline the SF edition of Low End Theory back in January, and it did not disappoint).

Many were completely unaware of him until a couple of high-profile remixes he did in 2010-11, but the release of his stunning debut LP, 2011’s “Places,” changed all of that, earning some serious Internet Hype Points (including some from this blog) in the process.

He’s undeniably the best of the second generation abstract/left-field beatmakers, and I feel the best of them overall after Flying Lotus (who has been pretty quiet for the last year or so).

With his new Vacation EP, released on LA-based Friends of Friends imprint, Shlohmo continues in the vein he’s been working for sometime: moody and atmospheric with unusual sound design and his unmistakably off-kilter percussion – full of stutters, pops and clicks. Amazing stuff from someone who, at only 23, has quite a promising future ahead of him.
