DecibelCast Vol. 23 – “L.A.-ted”

dB23

It’s been a minute we realize since we last posted a DecibelCast mix (or anything else for that matter). We’ve all been pretty busy doing adult stuff in our respective lives and, unfortunately, this blog has suffered for it. We have of course continued to discover and enjoy lots of different music, we just haven’t made the time to write about it. But, I digress…

This here is a mix I made specifically for a recent trip to Los Angeles (hence the title)—it starts with a bunch of West Coast G funk-inspired stuff and then works its way into some slick summery electronic pop. All tracks are new (with one obvious exception) and all are ideal for the warm weather. It’s a damn fine collection of songs, and I’ve been rinsing it steadily for the past few weeks. And so I figured “Why not share it with all of you?”

Hope you’re enjoying the summer

POND – “Man It Feels Like Space Again”

Australia based psych wizards Pond, released their 6th studio record, Man It Feels Like Space Again Jan 27th via Caroline Records. Ok, it’s early April and Im gonna go ahead and call it… this is the best record of the year, not the first quarter…the whole fucking year!! It’s Pond fully realized. The band features a few crossover alliances with Tame Impala  Nick Allbrook (lead vocals/guitar/former bassist of Tame Impala) Jay Watson (drums/vocals/current guitarist vocals of Tame Impala) Joseph Ryan (Guitar/Bass/Vocals) Jamie Terry (Keys) and mixed by Kevin Walker (Tame Impala).

Pond formed in 2008 in Perth Australia with the idea of creating “an all inclusive, ego-free collaborative” and have evolved with every record into the dynamic psych driven machine they are today. The record is a cohesive piece of sonic brilliance, so extracting independent standouts proved a chore albeit below you’ll find a couple tasters along with a handful of videos including a short interview.

Pond – Medicine Hat

Pond – Zond

Pond – Holding Out For You

Melody’s Echo Chamber

Melodys-Echo-Chamber

This record actually dropped sometime last fall on Fat Possum Records, but it’ so perfect for this time of year, and I’ve been enjoying it so much as of late, I figured I’d share it with you all  just in case there is anyone out there who may not be aware of it yet.

The project and its eponymous LP, which draw their namesake from Parisian chanteuse Melody Prochet, sounds something like a cross between Broadcast and Tame Impala. So it really comes as little surprise that it was in fact produced by Tame Impala master-mind Kevin Paker. The Australian multi-instrumentalist’s hand print is all over this one, from the clattering drum kit to his signature fuzz guitar tone.

With that said, it’s hardly a Parker side project with a guest vocalist. The songs, which were written by Prochet but feature Parker playing many of the instruments, are fully realized pop numbers, that evoke something distinctly European and to this writer nostalgic. Like the great trip-hop and acid jazz of ’90s yore, this music is thick with blunted hazy atmosphere and dubbed affect.

Parker’s creative contribution though, helps to insure this is more than what otherwise may have seemed like a rehashing of DJ Cam or G-Stoned. His weighty mid tempo grooves and penchant for psychedelics and AM Radio ambiance make songs that might otherwise be run of-the-mill bossa nova/down-tempo into something much more strange and enjoyable.

Melody’s Echo Chamber – “I Follow You”

Melody’s Echo Chamber – “Bisou Magique”

Melody’s Echo Chamber – “Quand Vas Tu Rentrer”

“Sometime Alone, Alone”

“Crystalized”

DecibelCast Vol. 10 “A Seasonal Affectation”

Installment number 10 of our DecibelCast series is finally here (and not a moment too soon). The mix is basically a cross section of the various different musics I’ve been listening to this season, and thus stylistically it kind of careens wildly all over the map— lots of ’60s psyche rock, some hip-hop, some sad ’90s-style post rock, some foreign pop music and a bunch of odds and ends from 2012. In an attempt to keep the proceedings at least semi-coherent, the over-arching theme—as the name would imply—is one of melancholic introspection: an aural accompaniment to the short days and long nights of winter.

I had a lot of tracks in mind for this one and the runtime quickly ballooned to over 100 minutes. I was going to make it much shorter, but it split in half quite naturally, and so I decided to keep everything, and present it to you in two installments. That being said, it’s still intended to run seamlessly all the way through, so if you have the time check it out from start to finish.

I had a good time making this and I in my opinion it’s one my best, so hope y’all enjoy.

yours,
