DecibelCast Vol. 23 – “L.A.-ted”

dB23

It’s been a minute we realize since we last posted a DecibelCast mix (or anything else for that matter). We’ve all been pretty busy doing adult stuff in our respective lives and, unfortunately, this blog has suffered for it. We have of course continued to discover and enjoy lots of different music, we just haven’t made the time to write about it. But, I digress…

This here is a mix I made specifically for a recent trip to Los Angeles (hence the title)—it starts with a bunch of West Coast G funk-inspired stuff and then works its way into some slick summery electronic pop. All tracks are new (with one obvious exception) and all are ideal for the warm weather. It’s a damn fine collection of songs, and I’ve been rinsing it steadily for the past few weeks. And so I figured “Why not share it with all of you?”

Hope you’re enjoying the summer

Decibelcast Vol. 12 – “Playcation”

db12

It’s been a kind of a long winter (well they always seem that way though, right?) and it’s time to move on to the next couple of seasons, like spring and summer.  My way of doing this is to travel to a tropical island so I can burn off my pale white skin in one quick trip.  I know that you’re getting jealous of my amazing vacation, but don’t be so mad!  I’ve made a mix to help you get into the mood of the next season.  So even if you dont get to go to a white sandy beach, hopefully you can close your eyes, put on these relaxing jams, and pretend you’re there.  Don’t take a vacation, just hit play on this mix and take a Playcation. (Not to be confused with Playstation™)

Unknown Mortal Orchestra – “II”

unknown mortal orchestraUnknown Mortal Orchestra was one of the first bands I ever wrote about on this blog way back when… It seems like forever ago when I happened upon UMO‘s first couple of singles “How Can U Love Me” and “Ffunny Ffriends” on their bandcamp page.  Just like everyone else who heard these gritty, lo-fi, but remarkably catchy songs I automatically wanted to know more about the band.

Not long afterwards I had the chance to see them play in a tiny local coffee shop when they were touring for their first self titled album and I found out a few things. First that they weren’t an orchestra at all, they are only three guys from New Zealand. Secondly they were really an incredible band that have such a nostalgic, tripped out, oddly familiar sound that after that tour they will likely never play a venue that small again.

UMO - iiThis brings us to now, two years after all these discoveries about this rising band to their recently released second LP “II” (pictured above).  This album definitely still has the lo-fi, psyched out sound complete with amazing guitar melodies and drowny vocals from frontman Ruban Nielson.

What it does somewhat better than the first album though is dive deeper into this sound, expanding the realm the band operates in and taking the listener to the outer reaches of this trippy world.  There is more space, more substance, and more thought provoking music here, but not so much that it loses you.

In fact after a couple of listens it feels pretty comforting, kinda like an old over listened tape that you forgot about that brings back so many memories even if you kinda forgot about what the songs sounded like.  Either way this album will take you on a nice hazy, strange but really enjoyable ride.  So even if Unknown Mortal Orchestra is somewhat more known than they used to be it’s a good thing because more people need to know about this band.

Download a song off the new album and my favorites off the first album below, and check out some trippy videos.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Swim and Sleep

Fresh New Tracks

fresh bear tracks after winter hibernation

So there are a bunch of really good tracks I have stumbled across recently coming out of hibernation and so I’m just putting them all into one post for y’all right here.

First is a new Beastie Boys track!!! It’s called “Make Some Noise” and the full video is below. It is taken from the long version of the video called “Fight For Your Right (Revisited)” which will be released along with the full album on May 3rd. The new album is called “Hot Sauce Committee Part 2” and is streaming at the Beasties site here

The only place I could find this track and the Passion Pit remix of it for free is ironically at a site called fresh new tracks. So go there and get both of those and whatever else your heart desires.

Although not as big as a new Beastie Boys album, a new My Morning Jacket album is dropping May 31st and you can get the title track from the album “Circuital” at their website (click above link).

Next TV Girl has a free EP you can get here. Along with a 7″ they released with Dirty Gold.

New Villager has a track I cant get out of my head called “Rich Doors” that I found for free at RCRD LBL here. And if you don’t know about RCRD LBL it is one of the best sources for new free music on the interwebs fo sho.

Purity Ring came out with a new 7″ today I think with “Ungirthed” on one side and “Lofticries” on the B side which you can get for free here.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra is a band that I think will explode in your face soon even though they are unknown and I really know nothing about them but the song “How can u luv me” which you can get here. They just signed to fat possum and are on tour so check em out if you want to but I dont really care geez.

And finally I’m gonna end with a hard azz hip hop track so you don’t question my street cred. Its produced by Afrojack and blackberry commercial star Diplo and I know its by Chris Brown but for some reason he is having a resurgence which no one can explain… Anyway the track is called “Look at Me Now” its hot and it features Wheezy and Busta Bust and you can get it for free from Mad Decent here. Below is the video so you can see crazy Chris Brown dancing…Enjoy!

Anyways there you have it… Have fun finding and listening.
